NETSHARE has been working with members on an ongoing basis to help them navigate the new rules of job search – how to build effective electronic marketing documents, where to be seen online, how to build your personal network, you name it. Now it seems, with the dramatic rise in unemployment, the mainstream media are starting to catch up with what the rest of us have been preaching for the last few years. A prime example was an audio report on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition this morning that talks about “Job Seekers Find New Rules of Recruitment.” If you are still struggling with the new rules of job search, take a minute to listen to the broadcast. It offers a good primer.
Here are some of the highlights from the news story:
- Be sure you have an updated profile on LinkedIn (or similar career sites) with recommendations.
- Be wary of your e-mail address – no shared family e-mail addresses, no outdated AOL addresses, and be professional (no cutesy e-mail names).
- Be sure to do an extensive search about the company, its culture, and the job for which you are applying.
- Be sure to file a digital resume – paper is passé.
- Don’t spam executives with resumes if you haven’t made a contact in advance
- Don’t “friend” executives on Facebook, hoping for a job offer.
Technology continues to drive the way recruiters and hiring managers operate, so stay current and be smart about how you use online tools to build your personal brand and connect with potential employers. Remember that the NETSHARE forums and Experts Connection are always good resources to show you the ropes.
