When it comes to hiring, social networking can be a real jungle. I ran across this news from the CareerXroads newsletter – apparently when the company Twitter recently completed a hire, they alerted 186 other job applicants, via Twitter, that they had not been hired. Apparently, the plan was to alert each of the applicants with a “personal” email, but apparently all the candidates received the same message and were openly copied in the cc: line.
Naturally, there was a furor that followed. ValleyWag posted an article on the inhumanity of human resources and the arrogance and ignorance of HR professionals. There were numerous comments from everyone, including an insightful comment by one of those rejected who offered a link to his blog. As a result of being “outed” in e-mail, this candidate found the size and quality of the candidate pool interesting and insightful. It gave him some insight into what he could do differently in the future in his job search.
Despite their hiring faux pas, Twitter is becoming a more important resource for recruiters (which is why you should be twittering). Check out the short recruiter “how to” video posted by Jim Durbin on RecruitingBlogs.com on how to use Twitter to find job candidates. It’s a short video piece and not hard to follow, but it demonstrates the power of Twitter to find job candidates in target markets. This is all the more reason that your Twitter and LinkedIn profiles need to be crisp and reflect your personal brand.
